| You ever have one of those days at work when you stop to think "Any minute now these guys are going to figure out that half this stuff I just make up as I go along." I'm shocked at how often I as "let's try this" and people jump to try and make it work.
For people who enjoy power (which is not me) I bet it's a rush. For me it's a burden of responsibility as heavy as a mountain. Now I'm willing to take measured risks but they don't always pan out. My personal "rush" comes when the team is successful in completing the objective as a team.
Today after I first thought to get the tiger team heading in one direction I stopped, told them we'll reform tomorrow then spend the rest of the day one-on-one working with someone else in the company whose experience in this type of analysis was deeper than mine. The result is now at tomorrow's session I have a better, clearer plan for moving the process forward.
Sometimes being the leader means knowing that you DON'T have all the BEST answers. Sometimes being a leader means making tough calls in the absence of all the information. Most the type it seems to be about balancing the two.
ATTENTION PROJECT MANAGERS I'm thinking I want to create a Project Manager filter for my journal where I talk specifically about Project Management (or operations management) issues. As I don't know what a lot of you do who would like to be a part of such a filtered conversation?

| Considering I've been on an SCA sabbatical for more than six months now, this ain't so bad... Your result for The hardcore SCA Test... The Lord or LadyYou scored 42% hardcore SCA! You really enjoy the SCA and like to go to events when you can. However it doesn't take over you life or anything. You've probably got an AOA or will have one soon. Sometimes folks wonder where you've been when you make it back to a meeting or event. Take The hardcore SCA Test | |

| I blame Corby. He invented this litmus test that if he and I think something's a good idea it must be done. Last Pennsic, he thought up this idea of a row of war standards and I said Fabulous! having no idea this was validation. So, Alan and Thjora have been mucking about with standard pole technology for a couple months - with great success. Ergo, we really needed war standards, so I drug out all the silk painting stuff I've toyed with on and off for a few years, sucked Thjora and Kymber into experimenting and we decided to start with 4'x12' war standards. (This was sorta crazy. You should start smaller. But I'm glad we didn't.) Anyway, Pink and Corby have already posted bits and pictures about our weekend adventures in silk painting. Eventually, I'll write y'all a nice article about size, historic precedents, materials, drying time and after I finish a few more trial and error things with the new supplies. Besides, I'll have night and graveyard shift soon enough which should give me time to write. Meanwhile, Ninja cat is staring at the huge tiger and Roland's war standard rather curiously as if considering how much room this new cat creature will take up in the litter box. | |

Cingular is ridiculous. Ri-goddamn-diculous. Every other agency to which I pay money on a regular basis is willing to send me or the bank and simple repayment history or --even better-- a letter of credit. Not Cingular. They provide 16 months of past bills online, which is very nice of them. However. If you need anything further back than that, you have to pay. Then wait 7-10 days to get it.
Not to mention they won't just give you a repayment summary -- noooo, you have to go online and print out every single freaking bill you've ever received.
Luckily, I have super librarian powerz. I have saved every single bill I've ever received. Nice and neat, in a file folder, in chronological order. Except for three back in 2006 which I can't find, so I have to pay Cingular to send 'em out to me.
Spent an hour and a half on the phone today. Cranky.
It's almost 5 o'clock, yes?

| Haha!
We got our land info from the Land Staff. We lost one camp, and HdB is only one of three camps that grew. Everyone else (including all our neighbors around us) shrunk! Rock on! (Well, not Tash and Thomas's crew - we like them, and they only got about 2 people smaller.)
So we will get our little slice of heaven with little muss or fuss (knock on wood....)
This makes me think that numbers are going to be way down this year.
Here's a hope to a wonderful stress free land grab and a drama free (or at least light) year!

In other news, I fought fatigue and finished my breakdown box for the new Pillar of Flame, and got it about 1/2 way painted to boot. I need to paint the inside and bottom, paint on the fleur for decoration, and then seal it of course. I also have to seal the other box that I am leaving natural. (I love the look of the pine.) Overall that is good news.
I also mailed my garb back to my seamstress for alterations today. Hopefully it will get done in time for pennsic. Must remember surcoat for G tonight too....and remember to bug Steve about the Patches.
The next big project after Storvik this weekend is sheild painting and making weapons. Then it is just packing and loading. Woohoo Pennsic is apon us!!!!

I found the camera last night so picture will be forthcoming of various things, sights that I see around Richmond, Gracie, woodworking projects, etc.
Speaking of Gracie, she is starting to stand up by herself for brief instances. She is cruising like crazy and of course crawling at top speed. I expect that she will either start walking, or rather, controlled falling, in the next few weeks. What an exciting time to be a parent!
Can you tell i'm in a good mood? Tonight is fighter practice and attendance might be light. Either way, at least I get to fight, right?

| That came out surprisingly well. Drawing from my imagination is a very hit or miss exercise, and it's always pleasing when what you see in your minds eye appears on paper very much as you envisioned it. That is about what I would like my new helm to look like. Though I might have a bit more curve in the face plate to accommodate my nose. Last night I managed to get almost all of my driveway cleared. We piled many of the downed limbs and branches in the drive with the idea that I could actually get a chipper to them there as opposed to the very muddy yard. But in our zeal we barricaded the entirety of the driveway. It's not just a matter of moving the pile, that could be done in an hour, but more of stripping the small branches off the downed limbs so that what can and cannot go into a shredder is separate. I want to do all that before I rent the shredder by the hour, a rare bit of foresight on my part. It is a trying task in the best weather, in this damp fug with mosquitoes swarming like the deepest jungle it just plain sucks. But I've found that my carving hatchet answers wonderfully for this task, ( I love this tool) slicing though a two inch limb with one well directed swipe almost like a lightsaber. (Dunstan and I decided that in the Star Wars universe Lightsaber technology is actually derived from the logging industry.) So now I have an enormous pile of leaves and branches separated by the rule of thumb and a smaller but impressive pile of fair sized logs. If it doesn't rain on me as it is threatening to do I'll have it done by the end of the day. Done with the driveway that is. That only represents about a third of what is down... At least my hands are starting to harden up. -Justus - Mood:gloomy

| Poll: Pet owners prefer McCain over Obama AP - Tue Jul 8, 6:00 AM ET
Okay, it seems that ever since Hillary suspended her campaing, things on the Presidential campaign trail have gotten pretty boring. When the pundits are reduced to polling pet owners to see which candidate they will support in November, and try to make this headline material, things must be getting quite pathetic in the news front.
I really think they should interview Scandal the Cat next. I bet he'd have an interesting perspective. Especially if you ask him about the gooshy food issue and how this will affect the price of oil.
"So, Mr. Scandal. What do you think of the current candidates for the Presidency of the United States?"
Are you talking to meow? says Scandal the Cat.
"Yes sir. Who do you think the American people should vote for in November?"
It depends. When am I getting my gooshy food? You know, it's past 9 p.m. and it's about *that* time.
"Well, I don't know about that but, but what do you think of the state of the economy and the climbing prices of oil?"
Where's my gooshy food you silly human?
"Do you think that we should change course in our policy in the Middle East?"
Scandal looks rather angry at this point. Obviously, these stupid humans don't know it is time for gooshy food. And if this particular one does not produce a can opener like, yesterday, his face is going to resemble a Hawaiian grass skirt pretty soon.
Groowwwrrrrr . . . growls Scandal menacingly.
The reporter, who is not as dumb as he seems, gets the hint and starts walking away from the cat . . .
"And as you see, Mr. Scandal the Cat has provided us with a valuable insight on the candidates, the price of oil, the conflict in the Middle East, and the state of the economy. More news at 11."
Wake me up when all of this is over.

| I just got a call that has me totally flabbergasted. The patron asked what percentage of people in the world are successful. Talk about an unanswerable question. Where do I even start with the reference interview on a question like that? She added that she had heard that it is a low number. I asked her what she meant by successful, but she just replied that she meant successful. Okay... I asked her about a source, to which she replied that was why she was calling us. I must have phrased the question badly. She added something like "you know, only so many people in the world are millionaires". Aha! So, I asked her if she was defining success as wealth. She replied (in a very exasperated tone) that she was. I was floored! I can't even conceive of equating success with wealth only. Guess that's why I am very happy and consider myself successful in a public service job! :-)
I finally found an online newsletter in which the author stated list 3% rule and opined that 3% of the people control 97% of the world's wealth. I read that to her and emphasized that the author did not list a source and that it was just an online newsletter. Her response? A very perky "I thought so. Thank you." But, but... I wanted to tell her it wasn't necessarily a reliable source. So, I guess in library terms the reference transaction was a success because the patron was satisfied. Sometimes my job is so weird!

| I made zero progress on Pennsic projects last night. I did get more supplies and ran a couple of errands on the way home. The misadventure with the bandsaw prompted me to get a new blade. No traction tires were in evidence. At least I got dowels, cuphooks, some pipe fittings (which I discovered I have to exchange today), more paint, and extensions to the dust collection system. It was nearly 7:30 by the time I got home, and I was tired and my stomach was being disagreeable, so I decided I needed to be in the house rather than in the shop. I suppose I am far enough along with most of the projects that I can afford the little break ( I hope).
Fall University and MusingsI sent out the call for classes late yesterday evening and got back a handful of responses already. People are more than willing to teach--it is just getting the venue that seems to be a struggle. I heard a rumor that yet again, someone is saying we should eliminate at least one session of University from the calendar "because it is always being cancelled". It isn't a question of lack of interest--the overwhelming response that I get to the call for classes often exceeds our available class space. People want to teach, and people want to learn. The problem is acquiring a suitable site. I looked back at some of the University records, and the early sessions for University of Atlantia were a handful of classes. The last several sessions have had 90 or more classes offered. Our current requirement for classrooms is pretty high. It is possible that we are suffering from the success of University. What I mean is we aren't able to find enough space and we are at a threshhold where we have to pay large fees in order to get the space we are requesting. Just thinking out loud here, but if we reduced the number of classrooms required (to say, 10), would we be more likely to get bids? If University were scaled back, it could help in getting sites in areas that don't often get a chance to host University. ( Toe Fu )

| So, I'm working on some new class ideas, and trying to decide which to retire. I'm going to offer a poll to get some feedback, with the caveat that I might not take any majority opinion as a firm idea, and I'm pretty serious about dropping Ottoman clothing. As I recently told another, surveys are fine, but you don't come up with the iPod by survey. Poll #1219769 What should Asim teach at Atlantian University?

| These are my picks from that list with one addition towards the top. I find it interesting they list the second Spider-Man but not the first. I liked the first and third better than the second. But any one of these any time of the day! I left their ranking from the original list. I should see how far out of median I am. Actually it’s a fairly even spread. Their list of 61 – 70 and 81 – 90 didn’t do much for me it seems. Other than that It’s pretty even. God I really am geeky today. Gangs of New York!!! 71. Unforgiven(1992) 94. These are all crap. They’re either over rated or should never have been made in the first place. I have a friend in the movie business. He has a term for some of these “cinematic masturbation.” I feel guilty for having spent money seeing some of these in the theater. 4. Blue Velvet (1986)

| I’ve had a post on familial hypocrisy floating around in my head for a while, but I just don’t have anything nice to say, so I should probably refrain. (in-laws/religious hypocrisy might make for good television, but has no real purpose in being said really.) So I shall brag about my husband first, yesterday he was given his second Air Force achievement medal, so he gets to wear an oak leaf on his ribbon, he was awarded junior officer of the quarter for his entire squadron, and he received a special award/crystal paperweight thingy and a special letter signed (not stamped or computer generated) by the Air Force Chief of Staff for excellence above and beyond in a tasking he was given last year. I have been thinking that I would try a fun project at Pennsic, since this is my first time going for 2 weeks; I am going to make a dress. I will be alone with the kids for the first week as Ansel will be at work, and as such the only thing I will have to do is teach my class and sit with them. I am of two minds about how I am going to do the project, 1. Buy the thread, fabric, needles, etc. all at Pennsic and make it a completely “Pennsic” dress. Pros….. Fun idea, interesting challenge, etc. Cons…. Might not find fabric I like, can’t easily pre-wash the fabric, Might have to spend more then I want too. 2. Take the materials with me from my current stash, and just make up the dress at Pennsic. Pros….. I can pre-wash the fabric, I know I will have something I like, and it won’t cost me anything extra. Cons….. It’s not really the same challenge. Either way I am hoping to wear it to attack_laurel’s party (although I will bring a backup just in case I don’t get it done on time.) I would like to happily invite anyone interested in playing with me to let me know so that we can sit together and sew. Edit: I've decided to go with option 2, and take materials up with me to pennsic Isaac's last shirt is done except for handwork i.e. hemming neck edging. Emmie's underdress for a viking apron I made her last week is done, (except for hand work) so that's one outfit off her list. | |

| So now, the serious part of yesterday's ideas.
People hate confrontation. The word itself sounds antagonistic, like there's going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight before you even start. In the SCA, this leads to nice people giving in to the jerks who always yell and whine until they get their way, no matter how many nice people get driven out by their behaviour.

| Well, actually 3 down. The handyman took all day and cost far more than I expected but the back steps have a wooden railing. The deck boards have been replaced and the shed door has a bunch of new trim pieces. The poor guy spent hours on the steps which were apparently neither square or level. Then the shed door bits had not just water damage but an ant's nest in them. Apparently they were not pleased with losing their home and bit him. Now I just have to stain the deck boards and railing and paint the shed.
Ooh and the painters called - perhaps we will get scheduled!

| I love movie lists. Just like the last one I posted I disagree with some of the rankings and titles. I forgot to bold There Will be Blood. I also noticed Gangs of New York isn't on the list. I would certainly put that movie in the top 5 if not 1. I mean really, Gangs of New York beats Pulp Fiction all night and day.
Here's Entertainment Weekly's list of the top movies of the last 25 years. Go through their list and BOLD the ones you have seen, ITALICIZE those you love/would watch over and over again, STRIKE OUT those you dislike strongly or really would rather never see again.

| So I am 99.9 % sure I have settled on my next tattoo design. GA and I refined and put it together this evening after the whole thing coalesced in my head whilst visiting with Snidegrrl and BizarroJack. Mock up pics can be seen here: First panel next to shinSecond and Third panels on calfFourth Panel on the outside of the legNow I turn to you, dear readers, for help. I need a shop, a parlour if you will, to get the work done. I am looking for recommendations from Va Beach to Baltimore Md. I am willing to pay the cash and put in the chair time for quality work. | I've now uploaded my pictures from our silk painting war standard workshop. While we are still in the learning process, here are a few tips: - Get the silk stretched taut on a frame. When you think it is tight, pull it tighter.
- Don't bother with using hair spray as a pre-treatment for stop-flow. It works too well and makes cutting in harder.
- Work small test pieces, and then work a larger test piece to get a better idea of any mottling and/or fading in the rinse-out stage.
- Plan your design out and, unless drawing freehand, make a template for each element, but allow for some flexibility when actual layout time comes, as things may look better another way once you get to scale.
- When using a paper template for tracing the resist lines, don't pin the template lines too close to the silk as it may cause problems with the resist application.
- The black resist is easier to check after application to ensure that all lines meet to create a dam for the color. The clear resist is mostly useful if you plan on a design with interior detail on a white background. Using an up-light from below will help with checking the clear resist application.
- Make sure that your resist lines meet to create a separate area for each new color. This is doubly important when skipping the flow-stop (hairspray) step as mistakes will spread quickly.
- Be careful with application, don't hurry and don't spill. A paper towel under the paint-cup helps control drips.
- Use a large (1-2" wide) brush for applying color in larger areas, but be careful of possible splatter. The special high quality silk painting brushes are worth it.
- If using the heat-set dyes, iron for far longer than you think you should, and heat set in the dryer for a few minutes on high before attempting a rinse.
- Rinse carefully.
A couple of things we still have yet to try: - Apparently there is a fixative that you can add to the dye to set it without heat. It does only allow the dye to last 6 hours, so will involve more waste, but could save you hours of ironing.
- Theoretically the resist is not water based so shouldn't have washed out in the rinse, but we'll do a test area to see if we need to re-apply the resist before re-applying the dye.
- If the silk is damp then the dye will dry slower and should prevent the lines between our cut in areas and the large fill areas. We plan to try a sponge for this for even application of water before applying the dye.
And one last cautionary tip. Don't leave your camera unattended around silly drunks and be unprepared for the unexpected pictures you find at download time.

| Okay... so I saw this. To sum up, FEMA stored about $85 million worth of supplies meant for Katrina victims for TWO years before declaring it "surplus" this past February and gave the stuff to 16 states (including Mississippi), prisons, The state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, but NONE of the supplies trickled down to the Katrina victims. The reason no one told them there was a "great need" for the supplies. Okay.. I'll grant you that the folks in Mississippi weren't hit has hard as those in the 9th ward, but come on people; how could you NOT know there was a great need? How is there no real accountability for this? How can someone open their mouth and make a comment like that?? I have a person who had to spend 10-12 hours studying for a class that started today. He had to fax me something he'd signed to indicate he completed the work; I sent him an email that specifically said "You've completed the prerequisites and done the work required to attend the Blabbidy Blah class that starts on Monday July 7th. So tell me, who in their right mind would FORGET to go to class and finally get around to calling me two hours before the end of the first day? I was dumbfounded. I actually had to call another of my cohorts to ask what I should do; and then call his boss. It's a four day class.... Before I could get my act together, his Bosses boss called me with the dufus in his office. "Can he go to the last three days of class and we just find him another first day somewhere else later?" "Nope; that's not how the class works." "Okay, can we just send him to the next four day class?" I'm sorry, no. He has to go to the class that's closest to him due to budget and travel constraints. I can't authorize him to travel unless he couldn't go to class because of some sort of an emergency, and forgetting to attend the class doesn't qualify. "So when's the next class?" September. "September?" yes. September. Did I mention that last week, it took me and his direct boss two days to figure out who was going to this class (which of the 11 people we had originally planned). Lots of planning and conversation went into figuring out who was going and who wasn't going; and this genius forgets to go to class. | |
